In general, obesity and weight loss are taboo topics for those in recovery from eating disorders. It is well known that eating disorders can develop as a result of a drive for thinness. Research shows that dieting behaviors and restrictive eating can cause binge eating, and possibly bulimic behaviors. Therefore, most eating disorder treatments emphasize concepts such as Body Positivity, and Health At Every Size (HAES)®. Words such as “weight loss” and “obesity” are not to be mentioned.
However, many people struggle with being in bigger bodies. Perhaps they have let go of the pursuit of weight loss from the standpoint of “society’s ideals,” and now they find themselves desiring to shed pounds for their own health goals. Especially at a high BMI, meeting the criteria for the medical diagnosis of obesity, people often have mobility issues, joint pain, diabetes, high blood pressure, and other indications of compromised health. This is another example of weight loss being an intention to improve health.
For more than 25 years, “Dr. Dorie” McCubbrey, PhD, MSEd, LPC, LAC, CEDS-S has provided help for people who want to lose weight in a healthy way, as a means of eating disorder prevention. In addition, Dr. Dorie has worked with thousands of clients with eating disorders, many of whom benefit from what she now calls The UnDiet Solution™ featuring her method of Eating Disorder Intuitive Therapy (EDIT)™.
