BridgePoint Center for Eating Disorders

Milden, Saskatchewan – Canada

What started out as a pilot project in 1997 has turned into an innovative eating disorder program that has gained attention at a national level and has positively impacted thousands of lives. Saskatchewan residents are truly fortunate to be able to access holistic residential programming for disordered eating – including bulimia, anorexia, binge eating disorder and eating disorders not otherwise specified.

BridgePoint Center for Eating Disorders is a provincial resource that provides program options that include intensive rehabilitation, recovery and healing for people who are experiencing eating disorders. We are a non-profit provincially approved facility that works in partnership with Heartland Health Region, funded through Saskatchewan Health. We are a residential program where participants stay in community at our facility for the duration of their program. There are 15 beds available, with 24/7 support.

BridgePoint focuses on an alternative approach to healing—focusing on many areas of a person’s life. We incorporate different exercises throughout our programming that focus on mind, body, and spirit. At BridgePoint, we do not use the phrase “fixing” people because we do not believe they are broken. We believe that the participants have the answers within themselves and that they are stronger than they believe. This strength is what will help them get through this journey. BridgePoint is not a “cure” for disordered eating because we understand recovery is a process and it will take time. We are often asked our success rate and it is not possible to give a definitive answer because success is hard to define. For example, for one person success might be getting rid of their disordered eating behaviors but the thoughts are still occurring. Success to another individual may mean purging less. We have seen success in forms such as support, resiliency, courage, strength and hope.

The entire staff at BridgePoint recently became EDIT™ Certified III – including on-site training by “Dr. Dorie” McCubbrey, PhD, MSEd, LPC, CEDS – the Creator of EDIT. Dr. Dorie stated in a testimonial letter, “I would like to share BridgePoint Center with you, because in my professional opinion, their unique approach is giving individuals a greater chance of lasting freedom from eating disorders. I am very impressed with their treatment model, which provides customized care, giving patients concrete tools to take recovery into their everyday life. I hope to build awareness of this wonderful treatment center, especially in provinces outside of Saskatchewan, as well as in the United States. With BridgePoint’s customized and compassionate care, complete recovery from eating disorders is possible!”

Jamie Doak, MA, LPCC, NCC
EDIT™ Certified III

Colorado Teen Therapy
7009 S. Potomac St.
Suite 102
Centennial, CO  80112

 720.441.3714 x 703

Jamie is an Denver-area adolescent therapist, but started her career working with teens as an English teacher and over the years has taught grades 8-12.  While she loved helping students connect with characters in novels and learn to write their own stories, she noticed that she was spending more time at school talking with her students and helping them navigate their world than she did lesson planning or grading papers – and that she enjoyed it way more! She made the switch to counseling and has spent the past few years as a counselor in a high school working with students and their parents to figure out how to deal with the inevitable difficulties of being a teen.

It’s normal for teens to struggle- and it’s important that they learn healthy ways to cope with stress and doubt along the way. Jamie specializes in working with middle and high school girls who struggle with anxiety, perfectionism, body image and disordered eating.  She believes that it is vitally important for young women to recognize that their worth is not determined by their performance, their strength is not measured in trophies and their beauty is not judged by the media.

Jamie is a Licensed Professional Counselor Candidate (LPCC),  National Certified Counselor (NCC) and EDIT™ Certified Counselor. She graduated with her MA in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Denver Seminary and has a BA in Women and Gender Studies and Plan II Honors from the University of Texas at Austin.

I would love to work with your teen and help her shed the pressures of who she thinks she’s supposed to be in order to become the strong young woman she was meant to be.

EDIT™ Certified III

Whitney Geenen Counseling
2002 W. 120th Ave
Suite 1
Denver, CO 80234

Whitney is an EDIT™ Certified Therapist in Denver, Colorado. She holds a Master’s Degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, where she graduated with honors. Her specialties include the treatment of eating disorders, mood disorders, substance use disorders, and trauma/posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Whitney understands that recovery from an eating disorder is challenging and sometimes seems impossible, because she’s been there. However, she also knows that recovery becomes fully possible when you choose freedom over your disorder. In her clinical practice, Whitney combines her personal experience with cognitive-behavioral and psychodynamic approaches to help clients develop a deeper understanding of themselves and their values on their path to long-term recovery. She is compassionate, empathetic, non-judgmental, and straight-forward; she uses a balance of these qualities to provide her clients with a safe and trusting environment in which they can be challenged and grow.  Cindy Gordon, PhD,
EDIT™ Certified II

Registered Psychotherapist (CO) #13953

Private Office Location
Boulder, CO

Cindy Gordon is an art therapist and psychotherapist in private practice (HealChangeGrow) in Longmont, CO. She works with children, teens and adults facing a range of issues, including sexual trauma, depression, grief, medical illness, and relationship and body image issues. She combines art therapy with animal-assisted psychotherapy, in which animals are partners in the therapeutic process. She believes animals, in addition to art-making, can reduce stress, teach us lessons about ourselves and facilitate therapy in innovative ways. Cindy works with clients using both verbal psychotherapy and non-verbal methods (art therapy, photography, and writing). Clients have found art-making, such as collage, painting, drawing, poetry, as well as photography, productive methods to reduce stress, promote self-awareness, and gain insights about themselves. She uses an eclectic approach, combining psychodynamic, cognitive-behavioral and mindfulness elements. She also has a deep interest in sharing an existentialist perspective, so clients will explore how they make meaning in their lives, and how they may do so in the future in a way that is consistent with their core values. Cindy has earned the credential EDIT™ Certified Therapist and has found that these psychotherapeutic methods dovetail nicely with the EDIT™ approach: it is strongly strength-based and client-centered, and the EDIT™ model lends itself nicely to integrating creative elements.
Between stimulus and response, there is a space. In that space lies our freedom and power to choose our response. In our response lies our growth and freedom. -Victor Frankl

Carolyn Jennings
Journal to the Self®
Certified Instructor
EDIT™ Certified III

Private Office
Westminster, CO

Journaling became an essential life tool for Carolyn Jennings when she was a patient in an eating disorder clinic. Her thirty years of living in recovery from binge eating disorder have been fueled by her ongoing practice of uncovering her authentic self on the blank page, a self stronger than disordered eating. As the author of an award-winning memoir told in poetry, Hunger Speaks, and a Journal to the Self® Certified Instructor since 2008, she guides others to use expressive writing techniques to go beyond the story of who they think they are and what they think they know. Carolyn facilitates journal-writing groups in the Denver-Boulder area including at the Eating Disorder Foundation’s Support Center and at the Positive Pathways Counseling Center. Using her expertise on the power of expressive writing in health and healing, she has run workshops and a webinar and written for the National Eating Disorder Association, as well as presented at an Eating Recovery Center Foundation Conference and at a Colorado Counseling Association annual conference. One of her specialties is guiding women into peaceful relationships with their bodies based on love and trust. She chooses to accept her own perfectly imperfect body (by putting her thoughts on a diet!). Carolyn’s passion is using expressive writing as a tool for transformation and wholeness, and this fits perfectly with the principles of EDIT™, based on releasing the false self and recovering the True Self. Described as “passionate and nurturing,” Carolyn brings writing tools to group settings and can work individually with anyone anywhere via cyberspace.

Mychal Love, MA
EDIT™ Certified II

Transformation Counseling
716 Tejon St.
Colorado  Springs Co. 80903

Mychal received her B.A. in Psychology from the Ashford University in Clinton, Iowa in 2011 and her M.A. in Marriage and Family Therapy from Argosy University in Sarasota, Florida in August of 2016. She relocated to Colorado Springs in September of 2016, where she is currently a Registered Psychotherapist, and is in the process of applying for her Marriage and Family Therapist Candidate License.  Mychal has previous experience working as a Psychiatric Nurse for several prisons and had the privilege of working with a physician who treated eating disorder patients for the Renfrew Center in Philadelphia, PA.  This was the beginning of her interest in eating disorders in general and Binge Eating Disorder in particular.   She also worked as a case manager for an insurance company and though this was able to begin working with people who either just had bariatric surgery or were in the process of applying to have it. This work helped her realize that obesity was a family disease and her new goal became to help obese clients and their families make the changes needed to overcome obesity related eating disorders.  She has earned the credential EDIT™ Certified Counselor and believes like obesity, healing is a shared family activity and that an individual and family can find both hope & healing with her help through seeing himself or herself as holistic beings (heart, mind, soul and body) during the treatment process. Mychal use Solution Focused Therapy along with Cognitive Behavioral Therapy along with the principles of Eating Disorder Intuitive Therapy (EDIT)™ to help clients and families learn to understand and work to change behaviors that helped develop and maintain the eating disorders in hopes of preventing them from being taught to future generations.  Mychal believes her place is to encourage, listen and offer a hand to those suffering from obesity and its related eating disorders and to help families understand that the cycle can be stopped.  In 2017 Mychal intends to offer mindfulness techniques as well as Biofeedback training to help clients get in touch with their feelings so they can better understand them and their relationship to food as well as using EDIT to help them make the changes they need to become the person they envision in their mind.

I used to think,
” I’m broken, I’ll fix myself

But nothing happened.

And somehow, I got fixed.

Charline Bengtson is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT), Minnesota Association of Marriage and Family Therapy Board Member, an AAMFT Clinical Fellow and an EDIT™ Certified III Practitioner in rural Minnesota. She offers clinical experience and compassionate support for individuals struggling with disordered eating.  She can provide an understanding of Eating Disorder prevention, diagnosis, and treatment in a region with limited resources for Eating Disorder treatment. Charline takes an integrative treatment approach, working collaboratively with providers throughout Minnesota to establish a whole-body team to guide clients through the healing process.  The goal of treatment is to create a healthy, balanced relationship between nutrition, the mind, and the body. Success in therapy is based on the ability to find trust and comfort in the therapeutic relationship. Trust and comfort have the power to provide healing, growth and guidance on the journey of recovery. Charline’s philosophy to therapy seeks to restore balance to her client’s life through finding peace with one’s thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. Her ultimate hope for clients is for them to discover authentic and true healing for the entire well-being. It takes incredibly brave individuals and families to seek an alternative perspective when life becomes distressing and overwhelming. Sometimes we just need someone to hold space for us. Sometimes we need someone to be real with us.  Sometimes we need to understand and trust the process of recovery and healing.  Sometimes we need to gain knowledge about biological and psychological processes.  Sometimes we just get completely lost along the path and we need to find our feet again.

Sarah is on a serious mission and more convicted than ever to spread body positivity and aid in a healthy and balanced approach towards food. Throughout her twenties, Sarah struggled with Bulimia and is now over thirteen years recovered. She knows that God helped her through her experiences and darkness to serve others in finding the light they desperately seek, making it her life purpose. Spending time with the love of her life, especially exploring new restaurants with innovative cuisine, is one of her cherished activities. She has a son in college and three fur-babies at home that fill her heart with so much joy. Long walks in nature and tuning in through yoga, rejuvenates her, invariably. Born and raised in Texas, she loves guacamole and chips, of which at one time she was terrified. Now she can enjoy this favorite without that detrimental fear or guilt, reinforcing her firm desire to assist women in discovering this same freedom.

Anabella is a mother of two beautiful girls who suffered from this disease and therefore, she understands the struggles and significant impact this disease has on the entire family system. She’s fully committed to bringing hope and confidence to parents that recovery is possible and helping them become emotionally strong to be the best support system for their child. Anabella runs her own independent coaching practice and serves clients one-on-one and online through Skype sessions. During the journey of her daughters’ recovery, Anabella learned different healing techniques from different modalities that she integrates in her coaching sessions when appropriate. Anabella earned her Masters degree in Business Administration from Boston College and was an entrepreneur running a successful import business until the disease knocked on her family door. The disease and her daughters’ struggles lightened up the path for her to become a Coach. It’s her time to pay forward and help parents become the best version of themselves to effectively support their child into recovery. Anabella earns the trust and confidence of her clients because she definitely Walks the Talk!

Every experience is a blessing. Sometimes it’s a blessing in disguise. The key is to recognize the lesson behind the experience and everything unfolds perfectly.

Martha Ximena Niembro (Ximena Ni) is a Young Life and Wellness Coach from Mexico City who struggled with an eating disorder in the past. While recovering, she discovered her passion for Counseling and Nutrition which ultimately, made her recovery solid. She is a Certified Health Coach, Life Coach, Personal Trainer, EDIT™ Certified Therapist and is also a current Clinical Nutrition and Dietetics Student in Florida. As a young coach, she understands the struggles that many people are facing today and the impact that this causes on their loved ones. Ximena uses body image, self-love, and self-discovery techniques, to help her clients find their identities. Mind and Body connection is what she implements when she starts working with her client’s. The EDIT™ Certification is great to complement her practice. Using the EDIT™ techniques allows her to go even deeper, to identify and understand her client’s True-Selves and false-selves. We all might struggle to find the voice of our intuition and our false voice might always try to bring us down. Ximena understands the process of helping anyone who might be struggling. She thinks that every single past struggle that she had was worth it if she can help others.
